Plenty of books have been written about VW maintenance & tuning. So for starters, you will need a decent Workshop or Service Manual: for the T1 owners there is the Brooklyn 'VW Transporter Owners Workshop Manual' (ISBN 1 85520 1976) and for the T2 owners there is the excellent Bentley Service Manual (ISBN 0837600944) and the Haynes 'Owner Workshop Manual' (ISBN 0856966606). These manuals describe all common maintenance & tuning tasks and how you can do them yourself.
Besides using a Service Manual, there's also a lot of good information around on websites and forums. The only disadvantage of forums is that there is a 'large' amount of information shared that does not necessarily come from experts (and could potentially damage you and/or your vehicle). Therefore we have compiled a list of Hazel Armstrong's recommended online resources for safe and sound maintenance & tuning of your beloved van.
Rob and Dave's air-cooled VW pages are packed with 'hands on' maintenance & tuning tips and tricks you will not find in a standard workshop manual. The articles are clear and straight-forward, without the use of too many technical terms.
I personally use Rob and Dave's air-cooled pages to find answers to problems I can not find in any of my service manuals or after browsing some of the cluttered forums.
